Travel Cover Compared

Single-Trip vs Annual vs Student vs Schengen

The main travel insurance options for Kenyans — what each one covers, what it typically costs, and which is right for your trip.

In short: a single-trip policy (from KSh 1,200) covers one journey and is cheapest for occasional travellers. Annual multi-trip covers unlimited trips for a year and pays off from about the third trip. Student travel runs for the whole academic year with term-time medical and study-interruption cover. For a European visa, Schengen cover (from KSh 2,500) meets the mandatory €30,000 minimum and includes the visa letter. Travelling for umrah or hajj? See our pilgrimage cover.

Schengen visa requirement

A Schengen visa requires travel insurance with a minimum €30,000 medical and repatriation limit, valid across all 29 Schengen countries for the full stay — applications without it are rejected. Our Schengen travel insurance meets this minimum and we issue the Schengen confirmation letter within 24 hours.

Which should you choose?

Choose Single-Trip if…

You travel once or twice a year. It is the cheapest way to cover one journey, from about KSh 1,200, and can be made Schengen-compliant on request.

Single Trip cover

Choose Annual Multi-Trip if…

You take three or more trips a year. One annual premium covers unlimited trips and issues Schengen letters on demand — cheaper than buying cover each time.

Annual Multi-Trip cover

Choose Student Travel if…

You or your child is studying abroad. It covers the full academic year with term-time medical, mental-health, and study-interruption benefits a normal policy lacks.

Student Travel cover

Choose Schengen cover if…

You are applying for a European (Schengen) visa and need IRA-approved cover meeting the €30,000 minimum, with the visa letter ready in 24 hours.

Schengen cover
Travelling for umrah or hajj? Vike has dedicated pilgrimage cover for medical care in Makkah and Madinah, repatriation, and pilgrimage interruption — from about KSh 3,500 for a short umrah trip.

Frequently asked questions

Which travel insurance do I need for a Schengen visa?+

For a Schengen visa you need travel insurance meeting the mandatory €30,000 minimum medical and repatriation limit, valid across all 29 Schengen countries for your whole stay. Our Schengen travel insurance is built for exactly this and includes the visa confirmation letter; a single-trip policy can also be issued Schengen-compliant on request.

Is single-trip or annual multi-trip insurance cheaper?+

If you travel once or twice a year, single-trip is cheaper — from about KSh 1,200 a trip. If you take three or more trips a year, an annual multi-trip policy (from roughly KSh 12,000) usually works out cheaper than buying separate single-trip cover each time, and saves you arranging it trip by trip.

What is the difference between travel insurance and student travel insurance?+

Standard single-trip cover is built around a short holiday or business trip and only covers emergencies. Student travel insurance runs for the full academic year, covers routine term-time medical care (not just emergencies), and adds study-interruption cover that pays return-home and resit-travel costs — benefits an ordinary travel policy does not include.

How much does travel insurance cost in Kenya?+

It depends on the product and destination. Single-trip cover starts from about KSh 1,200 for a short regional trip; Schengen visa cover from about KSh 2,500 for a 14-day European trip; annual multi-trip from roughly KSh 12,000 a year; and student cover from about KSh 18,000 a year. All figures are illustrative — your premium depends on destination, duration, age, and cover level.

Does annual multi-trip insurance cover Schengen visas?+

Yes. An annual multi-trip policy can issue a Schengen-compliant confirmation letter on demand for each European trip during the policy year, so frequent travellers don't need to buy a separate single-trip policy for every visa application.

Can I get travel insurance for umrah or hajj?+

Yes — we have a dedicated umrah and hajj travel insurance product covering emergency medical care in Makkah and Madinah, evacuation, repatriation, and pilgrimage interruption, from about KSh 3,500 for a short umrah trip. It complements the basic health cover bundled with the Saudi visa.

Which travel insurance is best for studying abroad?+

Student travel insurance, because it covers the full academic year, includes term-time and mental-health care, and adds study-interruption and compassionate-visit benefits. A single-trip policy will not run long enough or cover routine term-time conditions.
