Golfers Cover Compared
The two golfers policies Vike places in Kenya, compared limit by limit: what each one covers at every level, and where the two genuinely disagree. Cover from KSh 3,500 for the year.
Neither insurer is simply better than the other, and that is the honest answer. First Assurance pays a far larger personal accident benefit and raises it at every step up the ladder, asks for no equipment list, and takes a smaller excess when you claim. Madison General carries the larger legal liability limit, pays more for personal effects, medical expenses and a hole in one, and goes further up the equipment ladder for a golfer with an expensive set. Both insurers label their levels with the same letters, and the letters do not mean the same cover, so compare the limits below rather than the labels.
These are the levels where both insurers write the identical golfing equipment limit. Holding the equipment cover still is the only fair way to see what else you are getting, because everything below it differs.

The higher figure on each line is highlighted. A higher limit is not automatically the cover you need: read it against how you actually play.
Each insurer writes golfers cover as a ladder. The limits step up together, but not in the same proportions and not to the same ceiling, and one insurer writes a level the other does not sell at all.

Limits are the insurers' own published figures and are the maximum payable under each section. Premiums depend on the level chosen and are confirmed on quote.
These apply the same way at every level, and they are where the two policies differ in day-to-day practice rather than on paper.
| Condition | First Assurance | Madison General |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment list requiredWhether you have to declare your clubs item by item when the policy is taken out. | No list needed | Yes, itemised at inception |
| Limit on any one undeclared itemThe most the policy pays for a single item that was never specifically declared. | KSh 15,000 | KSh 15,000 |
| Excess, each and every lossThe first part of any equipment or personal-effects claim that you carry yourself. | KSh 1,000 | KSh 2,000 |
The personal accident benefit is what you are really buying, and you want it to grow as you move up the ladder. It also asks for no itemised equipment list at inception and takes the smaller excess on each claim, so it is the lighter policy to buy and the cheaper one to claim on. Its ladder stops lower, so it suits a normal set rather than a tour bag.
You want the larger legal liability limit, which is the section that responds when a shot injures somebody, and more cover for personal effects, accident medical bills and a hole in one. It also writes the higher equipment levels, so it is the one to look at if your clubs are worth more than most insurers expect. It does ask you to list your equipment when the policy starts.
Neither is better outright, which is why this page exists. First Assurance pays a much larger personal accident benefit, raises it at every step up the ladder, asks for no equipment list, and takes a smaller excess on a claim. Madison carries a larger legal liability limit, pays more for personal effects, medical expenses and a hole in one, and goes considerably further up the equipment ladder for a golfer with an expensive set. Choose on which of those matters to you, not on price alone.
No, and this is the single most common mistake made when comparing golfers policies in Kenya. Both insurers label their cover levels with the same letters, but the limits behind those letters are different, and they diverge more the higher up you go. At the lower levels the equipment limits happen to match, so a genuine like-for-like comparison is possible; further up the ladder the same letter buys a different policy from each insurer. Compare the actual limits, never the letters.
Vike places golfers cover from KSh 3,500 for the year. It is an annual policy, priced by the cover level you choose rather than by your handicap, your age or your club, so the premium steps up with the equipment and liability limits. We confirm the exact figure for the level you want before anything is issued.
It depends on the insurer, and it is one of the clearest practical differences between the two. One requires an itemised equipment list when the policy is taken out. The other does not, and caps what it will pay for any single item you never declared, which means an expensive driver or a rangefinder is better declared specifically either way. Both approaches are normal; the list is more work at inception and less argument at claim.
Both policies carry a fixed excess on each and every equipment or personal-effects loss, and the two insurers do not charge the same amount. The excess is deducted from what you are paid, so on a smaller claim it matters more than the headline limit does. The exact figures for both insurers are in the policy conditions table above.
Yes. Both policies cover golfing equipment on and off the course, including in transit and in a club locker, which is the whole reason the product exists: a household contents policy is written around the home and usually does not respond to clubs stolen from a car boot, a locker or a buggy. Cover is not limited to your home club or to Kenya-only play unless the policy says so.
Look at the legal liability line rather than the equipment line. That is the section that responds when your ball or your swing injures another player, a caddie or a member of the public, or damages a car in the club park. It is also the section where the two insurers differ most at the same level of equipment cover, so the choice is a real one. An injury claim can run far past the value of any bag, so it is worth buying the liability limit you actually want rather than the one attached to the equipment limit you need.
Yes. Vike Insurance Brokers is an IRA-regulated brokerage and places golfers cover with both of these underwriters, so you see both sets of limits before you decide rather than one insurer's ladder on its own. Send us the approximate value of your clubs and bag and we will come back with the levels that fit and what each one costs.
Tell us roughly what your clubs and bag are worth and how you play, and we will come back with the levels that fit from both insurers, with the premium for each.
